Chapter 11

Saturday morning found the house crowded from one end to the other with family, friends, and neighbors who’d gathered to help Alex wrap presents, stuff stockings, and prepare food baskets for the Santa’s Sleigh project. A group of kids from Zimmerman Academy planned to help Alex, Diego, and Scooter deliver everything to the families on the list the following day, but today my home felt like Santa’s Workshop. I loved it.

“I have to say that Alex is the most organized teenager I’ve ever come across,” Hazel said as she stepped up to the long table that Alex and Scooter had set up that morning for wrapping presents.

“She is organized,” I agreed. “The wrapping paper and ribbon are color-coded, so you just need to choose a station, and everything you’ll need, including name tags and tape, has been provided. The food items to be placed into the baskets have been organized in the kitchen, and stocking stuffing is taking place in the den.”

“Where are the kids?” Phyllis, who’d come in with Hazel, asked.

“Jeremy’s daughter, Rosalie, is watching all the younger kids in Catherine’s room upstairs. They’re having snacks and watching Christmas cartoons.” I pulled a baby monitor out of my sweatshirt pocket. “I’m keeping an ear on things as well, and I have to say that Rosalie is an excellent babysitter. The younger kids like and respect her, and since she’s older, they basically do anything she tells them to.”

“When Alex told me that she was only going to dedicate one day to wrapping, sorting, and stuffing, I thought she’d never be done in time, but it really does look as if she’ll be ready to go on her ride tomorrow in plenty of time,” Hazel said.

Once I’d shown Hazel and Phyllis what to do, I ran upstairs to peek in on the kids. They were all quietly watching TV, so I popped into my bedroom to call Sheriff Salinger. He still hadn’t called me back, and I was beginning to get annoyed. Not that he owed me a return call exactly, but we’d worked together long enough that I really had thought he’d make time in his day to keep me updated.

“I guess if I can’t get my info from the source, I’ll have to try a workaround,” I whispered to myself as I dialed my dad’s number.

“Good morning, sweetheart. How is the wrapping party going?”

“It’s going really well. Mom and Harper are here to help. She said that you had to work today.”

“I do have to work, but I’m there in spirit. How are you feeling?”

“Better than I have in a while. Zak will be home today, although it will be late. I suspect I’ll be feeling even better once he arrives.”

“That’s good. I’m hoping that you’re through the worst of it. As a father, watching his baby girl in so much discomfort is never fun.”

Baby girl. That was sweet.

“So everyone is talking about the fact that Weston was likely drugged since we all seem to agree that
